Adoptionism

The earliest Christians believe Jesus was a man appointed by God as the messiah, and hence adopted as God's son. This is a collection of Bible quotes that support that.

The Other Davidic Kings

All the kings from david's line were adopted as God's son:

2 Samuel 7:14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, 15 but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’”

Psalm 2:7 I will tell of the decree:

The Lord said to me, “You are my Son;

today I have begotten you.

Psalm 89:20 I have found David my servant;

with my sacred oil I have anointed him.

...

26 He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father,

my God, the Rock my Savior.’

27 And I will appoint him to be my firstborn,

the most exalted of the kings of the earth.

That last one says David was appointed as God's firstborn.

Appointed

 Jesus was likewise appointed.

Rom 1:4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power[b] by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.

Acts 3:20 and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you,

Acts 10:42 And He ordered us to preach to the people, and to testify solemnly that this is the One who has been appointed by God as Judge of the living and the dead.

Acts 17:31 because He has set a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all people by raising Him from the dead.”

The Son of Man

Some Christians cite the synoptic gospels, where Jesus is the son of man.

Mark 2:8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.”

Luke 22:69 "But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”

Luke 21:27 "At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory."

The son of man. An odd title for a god to give himself! And also a title used for Daniel and Ezekiel in the OT.

Daniel 8:17 As he came near the place where I was standing, I was terrified and fell prostrate. “Son of man,” he said to me, “understand that the vision concerns the time of the end.”

Ezekiel 2:1 He said to me, “Son of man, stand up on your feet and I will speak to you.” 2 As he spoke, the Spirit came into me and raised me to my feet, and I heard him speaking to me.

3 He said: “Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have been in revolt against me to this very day. 4 The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn. Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says.’ 5 And whether they listen or fail to listen—for they are a rebellious people—they will know that a prophet has been among them. 6 And you, son of man, do not be afraid of them or their words. Do not be afraid, though briers and thorns are all around you and you live among scorpions. Do not be afraid of what they say or be terrified by them, though they are a rebellious people. 7 You must speak my words to them, whether they listen or fail to listen, for they are rebellious. 8 But you, son of man, listen to what I say to you. Do not rebel like that rebellious people; open your mouth and eat what I give you.”

Also worth noting

Paul thought all the righteous would be adopted as the sons of God:

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

2 Corinthians 6:18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Galatians 4:5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

Paul saw Jesus as the prototype - "firstfruits" - for what what happen to all Christians. Jesus was resurrected and adopted as the son of God, therefore all the righteous soon would be.

With regards to "begotten", note that Paul calls Philemon his begotten son, so the term is consistent with adoption,

Philemon 1:10 I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:

The disciples thought Jesus was the messiah who was going to restore Israel. It is right there in the Bible.

Acts 1:6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”

That is the Jewish idea of the messiah, not the modern Christian concept.
